What should the hospital of tomorrow be? This book, based on the Research Finding Reportfor the Al Dayaan Healthcare District Masterplan by AMO/OMA, includes interviews with healthcareexperts, analyses of historic references andexamples and a proposal for the ultimatehospital of the future.
Renovations, refurbishments, retrofits… Is the contemporary hospital like the contemporary airport – never finished? For generations, architects, engineers, and planners have searched for ‘the perfect solution’, only to find their efforts fail the test of time. Over the last decades, medical science has advanced exponentially. By the time any hospital project is completed, at least three cycles of medical innovation have passed. Most hospitals are out of date before they are even finished. Is there a way out? How do we define the hospital of the future when the future of the hospital is a permanent unknown?
The Hospital of the Future draws on the research findings report by OMA and Buro Happold that supports their work on the Al Daayan Health District Masterplan in Qatar. Soliciting the thoughts and insights from the design, healthcare, and technology communities, the report explores what a hospital would need to be in twenty years’ time. Adopting a hybrid approach of research and design, it also tentatively outlines a prototype for a site-less, idealized low-rise hospital, offering a glimpse of the hospital as a future-proof system.
