In 2021, Venice Architecture Biennale 2023 curator Lesley Lokko established the African Futures Institute in Accra, capital of Ghana, not only to offer world-class education on the African continent but also, she says, "to seize the experimental, more radical space that Africa offers, to think differently about architecture studies worldwide". In an Africa where the average age is 20, there is "an incredible energy" that represents an opportunity to considerably enrich not only teaching but the discipline in general. This 455 issue will not only offer a selection of African contemporary buildings but will also ask the following question: What is Africa's input on contemporary architecture worldwide?

Featuring: Olalekan Jeyifous, Azu Nwagbogu, Kodwo Eshun, Mariam Issoufou Kamara, Sénamé Koffi Agbodjinou, Khensani De Klerk, Miriam Hillawi Abraham, Armelle Choplin, Jean-Charles Tall and Annie Jouga

And buildings by: Diébédo Francis Kéré, Christian Benimana (MASS Design Group), Heinrich and Ilze Wolff (Wolff Architects), Nzinga Mboup and Nicolas Rondet (Worofila), Tosin Oshinowo (CMD+A), Localworks, Sumayya Vally (Counterspace)

Also: the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, Brazzaville as seen by Luc Boegly, The history of the Palais de la Porte Dorée by Jean-Claude Raspiengeas, the Reuse Notebooks by Victor Meesters and Vincent Laureau.

A special thanks to Gisela Graf and Martin Hofmann for bringing to our attention the DOM publishers Architectural Guide series dedicated to Africa
