Capsule, a sibling publication delves into the world of design in its broader definition - one that encompasses interiors and architecture, fashion and technology, ecology and craft - to explore the relationship with desire and consumption. A hybrid between a magazine and a book, paying homage to a lineage of Italian radical design publications while indulging in a lavish physicality, Capsule will be released annually during Milan Design Week. Its title is an homage to the Nakagin Capsule Tower, a symbol of the Japanese Metabolism movement designed by Kisho Kurokawa and built in 1972 in Tokyo, which is currently being disassembled to make way for new development.

This first issue comes with a set of three covers: In Oswalde Does Milan, we go to the source with Jenna Fletcher, the digital-native purveyor of fine design. Mario Bellini Forever celebrates the designer’s ability to adapt to changing times, on the occasion of the re-edition of his iconic Le Mura modular sofa. Plastic Drip traces the mutability of plastic as both material and metaphor on the occasion of a major new exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum.

Elsewhere in the issue, we tour the interiors (and inner world) of Milan-born designer Nanda Vigo, whose era-defining work is only starting to get the recognition it deserves; we look back to Alessandro Mendini’s work as an editor, discovering he built his legacy on the written page as much as through design; we meet Aaron Aujla and Benjamin Bloomstein of Green River Project, who are making waves with their unique, handcrafted interiors; we get personal (and Proustian) with prolific interior designer and all-around Renaissance man Karim Rashid; we capture a studio visit turned psychoanalytic session with the bad boy of Dutch design and head of Atelier van Lieshout, digging into shit, holes, and terrorism; and finally, multi-hyphenate audiofreaks Devon Turnbull and Eugene Whang connect the dots between DJing, DIY, and industrial design.

Made by the team that brings you KALEIDOSCOPE under the creative direction of Alessio Ascari, the magazine is art directed by Swiss-based firm Kasper-Florio and Samuel Bänziger, in collaboration with American artist Hassan Rahim. The editorial team comprises deputy editor Paul Cournet, managing editor Nicholas Korody, and editorsat-large Tibor Bielicky and Ellena Ehrl.
