The main purpose of this book is to explore what occurs when architects and designers are “in the making.” It examines how their methods of working are particularly effective at addressing complex problems and contributing to societal development.

As the articles demonstrate, this approach is quite inclusive, drawing from a diverse range of methods, disciplines, users and contexts. The process involves a circular movement between ideas and material exploration that requires architects to shift focus many times and aims to build a clear understanding of how to achieve the intended goals.

The book features twelve articles by writers, researchers and lecturers from Denmark and abroad. All of them relate to the exhibition Methods in Architecture and Design, held at the Royal Danish Academy in 2024 and 2025. The articles explore topics such as the language of materials, the art of drawing, context-based architecture in extreme environments, deconstructed graphic representation, topographic mapping as composition and design experiments.
