Planning Landscapes presents planners and designers with a well-conceived planning instrument that is devided into two main parts: 'Elements' and 'Typologies', between which the reader can freely switch, depending on the scale being considered. All the information relevant to planning and design is presented here clearly, in detail and in context.

When transforming a design concept into a feasible project, landscape architects continually oscillate between two levels of consideration: the specific overall design task in the context of a certain planning typology - such as park, playground, outdoor swimming pool, or sports facility - and the individual spatial elements, such as stairs, ramps, paths, enclosures, outdoor furniture etc.

These two main sections are flanked by the introductory section 'Human Measure', which explains the fundamentals and parameters for designing outdoor spaces, and a reference guide at the end of the book, in which general dimensions and units as well as regulations and standards are brought together in a clear fashion.

The author, Astrid Zimmermann, is an independent landscape architect with an office in Berlin.
