What happens when an internationally famous comic book artist designs a building and a celebrated Dutch architectural practice undertakes its technical realization?

The Toneelschuur Playhouse's new premises in Haarlem provide the answer to the question posed by artist Joost Swarte and architects Mecanoo and simultaneously underscore the ever-relevant theme of eye-catching cultural building as logo for modern city.

The design for this theater building in a historic city center is based on a sketch by comic artist Joost Swarte. The plan has been developed in collaboration with Henk Döll of Mecanoo architecten. A "technical disk" forms the backbone of the building. On either side of this disc are two theaters, two cinemas, various foyers, a theater café and a garage for loading and unloading. The offices are housed in a number of historic buildings integrated into the complex. The spacious foyer on the ground floor is the heart of the building. The large glass facade creates an open contact between inside and outside.
