Innovation and international exchange in architecture and urban design: Europan is possibly the only organisation that can offer this, by means of a two-yearly competition for young professionals. In two decades Europan, a collaboration of - on average - twenty European countries, has developed into an extensive and significant European network.
The theme of the ninth competition round is “European Urbanity - Sustainable City and New Public Space”. “Sustainability” refers to both the non-wastage of natural resources and to an object’s envisaged durability.
This book gives an overview of the winning plans for the four Europan 9 sites in the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Almere, Groningen and Nijmegen. The designs are extensively documented. It contains interviews with the designers of the winning plans in which they explain their vision. It also includes a number of essays covering such subjects as Europan in a European perspective and the theme of the competition.
