RIETVELD HOPMI CHAIR

Author:Gerrit Rietveld

Publisher:Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten

  • May 15, 2013

The 'Rietveld HOPMI Chair' was designed by Gerrit Th. Rietveld in 1932. The presentation of the original reproduction was held on 15 May in our Institute. This chair is now available in a limited edition of only 250 copies.

Rietveld was already famous at the time he designed the HOPMI Chair, because of his designs of the red and blue chair (1917) and the Rietveld Schröder House (1924) in Utrecht.

The six-tube-elements forming the frame of the chair are connected with torpedo bolts which wre patented by the Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie 'HOPMI' from Utrecht.
Rietveld strove to design industrial produced pieces of furniture which were to be transported in a cheap way. The complete 'Rietveld HOPMI Chair' fits into a box of only 50 x 55 x 8 cm.

Around 1932 only two copies of this 'Rietveld HOPMI Chair' were produced of which one came into possession of prof. Lanjouw from Utrecht and the other was presented to a Swiss family. The Lanjouw heirs gave their copy in 2008 in loan to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht by which the 'Rietveld HOPMI Chair' was rediscovered.
