Landscape and Engery is about Designing for the Post Fossil-Fuel Landscape - from the solar panel on the roof to the scale of global politics.

The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Landscape and Energy is a ground-breaking book about the effect of this transition on our environment. This book Landschap en energie. Ontwerpen voor transitie is the first to visually compare the spatial footprints of all relevant energy sources; it explains the driving forces behind the exponential growth of our use of energy and sketches the breath-taking task that lies ahead for spatial designers, planners and politicians.

The options and choices for an emerging ‘post-fossil landscape’ are elaborated in a wide variety of case study designs. After all, energy is relevant at every scale and all levels of abstraction, from global political strategies to the solar panel on the roof. The challenges receive due attention in a series of essays on the energy market, the role of politics, the psychology of transition, and technical developments and constraints. Ultimately, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy proves to be much more than a technical task for professionals. On closer consideration, the energy transition above all is a cultural task that affects everyone.

This book addresses the relationship between energy and space in a versatile way: from the perspectives of taking inventory, designing, and demonstrating, with an eye on the past, present and future, and with a focus on both theory and practice.

This book addresses the relationship between energy and space in a versatile way: from the perspectives of taking inventory, designing, and demonstrating, with an eye on the past, present and future, and with a focus on both theory and practice.

The structure of the book can be divided along three ‘broad lines’.
- The inventory of the spatial footprints of different types of energy carriers and energy chains is presented in four sections: electricity, heat, (transportation) fuel, and the transport and storage of energy.
- Parallel to this, the book presents the findings of six case studies. Four of these case studies focus on the regional scale. A fifth case study deals with the small-scale unit in the use of energy and space, namely the household. This section opens with a case study that offers a spatial elaboration on the European scale.
- Five essays address the ‘partial transitions’ that the energy transition will entail. These deal with mobility (Dominic Stead and Adrian Hill, Delft University of Technology), economics (Frans Rooijers, CE Delft), politics (Jan Paul van Soest), technology (Karel Mulder, Delft University of Technology), and the emotional landscape (Dirk Sijmons and Machiel van Dorst, Delft University of Technology).

These three broad outlines (taking inventory, designing and demonstrating) are divided lengthwise into five thematic blocks: electricity; heat, fuel, network and storage and the human scale. The epilogue is followed by a lexicon, which features a wealth of key terms and available knowledge.

The book Landscape and Energy. Designing Transition will be presented at the international architecture biennale Rotterdam (IABR) 2014 - Urban by Nature.
