In the book 'Lessons in Circularity', de Architekten Cie. shares its lessons learned about circular design, realization and collaboration.

Architect and author Hans Hammink emphasizes in his story that circularity for de Architekten Cie. is not an idealistic hype, but a practical habit. The lessons in the book are therefore based on practical projects. The book is a valuable source of inspiration for anyone involved in the realization of the built environment. Examples include the Circl-building in Amsterdam and the circular bicycle shed under construction at Eindhoven station: a state-of-the-art circular building made from surplus NS parts, such as windows from the SGM train (Sprinter).

One of the key lessons in the book is why circular design and construction involves more than recycling materials or designing with used building components. Circularity requires a completely different approach to conventional design and construction; it is a system change.

Hans Hammink has been an associate architect with de Architekten Cie since 2004. His specialty is the integration of architecture with sustainable and circular principles. In addition to having worked on the Circl building, he is also one of the inventors of the Gebouwenpassoort: a three-dimensional digital twin of a building to which all circular data is linked.

During the design process of this book, we looked at various aspects to make the most suitable choice for this production. Which printing inks could be used, which different binding methods were possible, which formats would generate the least residual waste, which paper types were the most conscious choice. Was it possible to give existing material a new use (and thus extend its life span)? In making these choices, we relied as much as possible on the advice of experts in the field. de Architekten Cie. made their own material available in the form of old drawings. Folded around the publication like dust jackets, they reflect what this publication is all about.

Circularity is not an idealistic hype for de Architekten Cie., but a practical habit. We hope to inspire others, start conversations and connect market participants in their mission to circular building. On September 10, 2021 at 5:00 pm was the book launch and knowledge sharing event.
