Sustainable Urban Design, examples and persepectives – The Next Step
Werkgroep Duurzame Stedelijke Onwikkeling
Hardcover / 240 pages / text Dutch/English / June 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 37.00 euro
Sustainable Urban Design – The Next Step is a fully revised edition of Sustainable Urban Design – Examples and Perspectives (2005), which won the ISOCARP Gerd Alders Award for the best professional publication in the field of urban design and town planning.
Like its predecessor, Sustainable Urban Design – The Next Step, describes the next steps in urban design practice in a straightforward and accessible format. Using clear and richly illustrated examples of current projects, the authors show that sustainable urban design is not just a utopian dream; it is undergoing continual development in contemporary building practice and is increasingly becoming an integral and essential part of modern urban design. The development of concepts such as ‘CO2 neutral’, ‘climate proof’ and ‘cradle to cradle’ are evidence of the growing support for sustainability and the rising levels of expertise in the field. In fact, sustainable urban design is fast becoming the key driving force of urban planning and spatial develop-ment. This book highlights new discussions and insights and provides new and updated examples and references.
Sustainable Urban Design – The Next Step has been compiled by the Working Group on Sustainable Urban Develop-ment, a broad group of experts from the Dutch professional societies for urban designers and planners (BNSP) and landscape architects (NVTL).

Ecological Urbanism
Mohsen Mostafavi
Hardcover / 640 pages / text English / May 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 42.50 euro
With the aim of projecting alternative and sustainable forms of urbanism, the book asks: What are the key principles of an ecological urbanism? How might they be organized? And what role might design and planning play in the process?
While climate change, sustainable architecture, and green technologies have become increasingly topical, issues surrounding the sustainability of the city are much less developed. The premise of the book is that an ecological approach is urgently needed both as a remedial device for the contemporary city and an organizing principle for new cities.
Ecological urbanism approaches the city without any one set of instruments and with a worldview that is fluid in scale and disciplinary approach. Design provides the synthetic key to connect ecology with an urbanism that is not in contradiction with its environment.
The book brings together design practitioners and theorists, economists, engineers, artists, policy makers, environmental scientists, and public health specialists, with the goal of reaching a more robust understanding of ecological urbanism and what it might be in the future.
Contributors include:
Homi Bhabha, Stefano Boeri, Chuck Hoberman, Rem Koolhaas, Sanford Kwinter, Bruno Latour, Nina-Marie Lister, Moshen Mostafavi, Matthias Schuler, Sissel Tolaas, Charles Waldheim

Green Dream. How Future Cities Can Outsmart Nature
The Why Factory, Winy Maas, Pirjo Haikola, Ulf Hackauf
Paperback / 408 pages / text English / May 2010
Also available in this series: Visionary Cities
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 30.00 euro
The Why Factory dreams the Green City. There is confusion about what green means for design, architecture and urbanism. Winy Maas asserts that green projects are still disconnected efforts which fail to attain the scale of the interventions that are actually called for. Green is fashionable, but its design potentials remain unexplored.
Green Dream questions what is currently labelled as ‘green’ and in conjunction with experts elaborates how it ought to be defined. It challenges architectural conventions and looks into the potentials of new green architecture. It recognizes that green buildings alone do not make a green city, but also looks at potential solutions within the cities themselves, how it will change them and where the boundaries lie. Is a green city actually feasible? The Why Factory concludes that green is ultimately about performance. If you understand the metrics and numbers, then greenery can serve as inspiration. Visionary projects illustrate the green future that contextual, large-scale, imaginative and measurable architectural and urban projects might produce for us.

De Urbanisten and the Wondrous Water Square
Florian Boer, Jens Jorritsma, Dirk van Peijpe
Hardcover / 48 pages / text English / June 2010
Also available in Dutch edition
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 12.50 euro
This is the story of a smart idea: the water square. It is a story about the city and about rain. Worldwide, the frequency and severity of rainfall is becoming more extreme. This is a problem for many cities, especially delta cities such as Rotterdam, which lies on the River Maas and also below sea level. Capacity must be created in Rotterdam to receive 600 million litres of extra rainwater annually. Radical but clever measures are urgently needed.
To meet this problem, De Urbanisten devised the Water Square: a plaza that functions as a play area, a floating grass field, a theatre, and a place that can accommodate the water that would otherwise flood the streets and inundate basements.
This graphic novel tells the story of the water square from various angles. It illustrates the genesis of the water square: from the first idea on the drawing table to consultations with the municipal authorities on the eve of the construction of the first water square in the Netherlands. It tells the story of what can be done on the water square, how it works, and the numerous forms the water square can assume. But it also reveals why this idea was conceived, what the current problem is, and why the water square is such a smart idea. And it narrates the story of Max: an adventurous boy who explores the water square during a heavy downpour. It all ends as right as rain.

Pinpoint. Key Facts and Figures for Sustainable Building
Bruno Keller, Stephan Rutz
Paperback / 288 pages / text English / May 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 54.00 euro
In a world buzzing with satellite aerials, news flashes and status updates, this second Al Manakh – a special issue of Volume Magazine – provides an essential and comprehensive guide to the Gulf region during turbulent times: the worldwide financial crisis.
The credit crunch is a ‘stress test’ for the different development models in the region as nations prepare for a post-oil economy. This transition provides several challenges: economic re-profiling, food security, environmental exposure, multiculturalism and demographic growth.
Al Manakh delves into these challenges by profiling six cities in five countries bordering the Gulf (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia). From this common ground, Al Manakh builds an inside-out perspective with local authors reflecting on their own situation and expectations. Guiding voices include editors Rem Koolhaas and Todd Reisz (OMA), Lilet Breddels and Arjen Oosterman (Archis/Volume), Daniel Camara and Mitra Khoubrou (Pink Tank), Ole Bouman (NAi).
Al Manakh is for those seeking an alternating viewpoint on the growth of the Gulf – not one just from the air, but one also on the ground.

At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 48.95 euro
This visually stunning new title is dedicated to the seemingly magical transformation of spaces and structures. It covers an amazing range of residential and commercial architecture as well as large-scale urban renewal, showcasing projects that frequently cross functional boundaries. The dramatic scope of the renovations included in this title give the reader a visceral shock to the system: an office auditorium converted into an urban oasis, an old airplane repurposed into a must-visit hostel, and 19th century ruins updated to become a modern family home. Some transformations not to be missed include The Alan Voo House in Los Angeles, which doubled in size from a 1,000 square foot residence to a 2,000 square foot residence through the insertion of a new 16ft linear house into the existing house (Neil M Denari Architects Inc); or the refurbishment of a 1975 office building in Mexico City into a residential block with 23 apartments. Its main and rear facades having been replaced with a chopped metal façade in the style of the Mexican handcraft papel picado, creating a liveable artwork (Hierve-Disenaria Architects). Container Atlas. A practical guide to container architecture
H. Slawik, J. Bergmann, M. Buchmeier, S. Tinney
Hardcover / 256 pages / text English / April 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 49.95 euro
Shipping containers are modular, affordable, and virtually indestructible. More and more often they are being used to build temporary structures such as pavilions, offices, galleries, and bars that can be easily moved if necessary. This phenomenon has a name: container architecture. Container Atlas presents a wide range of contemporary projects along with an
in-depth investigation into the background and evolution of this topical field. The book illustrates how containers are being used as building blocks to accommodate the daily lives and special events of urban nomads. Because the structures that containers are used to build are not meant to be permanent, their architecture has a more short-term and playful character that often references current trends. Container Atlas features advertising, pop-up stores, and temporary exhibits
that are built using this approach as well as sophisticated housing and office
spaces. Found in both urban and rural settings, these container structures provoke and inspire while setting new standards in functionality and aesthetics. Including detailed reports by experts in the field, Container Atlas explains the historical development of container use in architecture, documents plans, describes associated costs, and suggests concrete solutions for common problems. The book also introduces the various types of containers currently in use today, from
standard shipping models to modular pieces made to order out of various materials or with customized cutouts. Container Atlas is a practical and inspirational reference for architects, planners, and cultural activists as well as event and marketing managers, to guide them in deciding what types of containers are best suited to their upcoming projects.

The first book to document the Tokyo-based architectural firm, one of the most innovative practices working today. Achieving near cult status among architectural students around the world, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima of Atelier Bow-Wow have built a career confronting the challenges posed by dense urban environments. Their city houses - enclosed in vibrant, idiosyncratic forms - are distinguished by their capacity to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants. A basic feature is the permeability of interior spaces, where public and the more intimate places co-mingle, often in vertical structures with a total floor area that rarely exceeds 200 square meters. Atelier Bow-Wow has a dedicated research division that has published a number of treatises on vernacular architecture. This book will feature their newest research, including plans, as well as explorations on mobile or portable projects. The book includes key projects such as the Mini House, The Sway House, the Juicy House, House and Atelier Bow-Wow, the House Tower, and the Aco House.

49 Cities WorkAc (revised edition)
Paperback / 135 pages / text English / April 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 25.00 euro
How many inhabitants would Buckminster Fuller’s Tetrahedron City house? What would the density of Rem Koolhaas’ Exodus plan for London, or Superstudio’s Continuous Monument, have been had they ever been realized? How would they compare in scale to Kenzo Tange’s Tokyo Bay project, or to Corbusier’s Ville Radieuse? Which of them would have comprised more green areas? 49 Cities sets out to crunch the numbers of several centuries of unrealized urbanism, all the way from the ideal Roman city to the great utopian projects of the 20th century. Through plans, sections, charts and scale drawings, 49 cities are observed statistically and presented in an unprecedented comparative study, the result of a research project conducted over several years. Despite the fact that these cities never actually existed in their intended form, this overview of utopian urbanism provides a remarkable insight into our understanding of the contemporary metropolis.

Modern Architecture. Representation and Reality
Neil Levine
Hardcover / 376 pages / text English / April 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 52.95 euro
In this handsome book, esteemed architectural historian Neil Levine investigates for the first time the complex history of representation—the use and meaning of architectural signifiers—from the 18th through the 20th century. Using the lens of a continuous theoretical argument, Levine provides a detailed survey and critical analysis of major works by a host of modern architects, including Étienne-Louis Boullée, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Louis Kahn, Henri Labrouste, Augustus Welby Pugin, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, John Soane, Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Levine posits that all modern architects, much like visual artists, have had to grapple with issues of representation in their work. Interweaving influential examples from outside the scope of modern architecture, Levine traces the history of representation in architecture, and in writings on architecture, both within each architect’s oeuvre and throughout the centuries discussed. The book features previously unpublished images, many created for this publication, and it addresses a variety of specific cases while offering an original and panoramic view of the history of architecture. Beautifully written and accessible, Modern Architecture is destined to become a classic.

Architecture under construction
Stanley Greenberg
Hardcover / 120 pages / text English / April 2010
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 36.50 euro
Mies van der Rohe once commented, 'Only skyscrapers under construction reveal their bold constructive thoughts, and then the impression made by their soaring skeletal frames is overwhelming'. Never has this statement resonated more than in recent years, when architectural design has undergone a radical transformation, and when digital imaging systems now allow us to construct buildings that would have been impossible just a few years ago. Yet at the same time, the mystery of what lies underneath these manufactured surfaces is now more overwhelming than ever before. In "Architecture under Construction", acclaimed photographer Stanley Greenberg excavates the skeletons of some of our most iconoclastic buildings, spurring on a continued engagement with those intentionally (World Trade Center) and accidentally (Charles DeGaulle Airport Terminal) destroyed that furthers our fascination with what makes buildings stand up, and what makes them fall down. In stunning photographs, Greenberg captures the complex mystery and beauty found in the transitory moments before the outside of a building covers up the structures that hold it together. As designs for new buildings are revealed and architects and engineers challenge each other with provocative new forms and equally audacious ideas, Greenberg documents his own interest in this new architecture. Framed by a historical and critical essay by Joseph Rosa, the Art Institute of Chicago's curatorial chair, and an afterword by the author, the eighty captivating and thought-provoking images collected here - which focus on some of the most high-profile design projects of the past decade, including buildings designed by Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry, and Renzo Piano, among others - are not to be missed by anyone with an eye for the almost invisible foundations that continue to define our relationship with the built world.

Modern Architecture in Africa
Antoni Folkers
Hardcover / 376 pages / text English / April 2010
Also available in Dutch edition
At NAi Boekverkopers/Booksellers for 42.50 euro
Modern Architecture in Africa’ is one of the few Western studies of modern African architecture. The architect Antoni Folkers calls into question the moralistic, simplified Western Modernism that has become stranded in the African savannah. The critique of the one-sidedness of Western architecture is not only theoretical, but also assumes a practical form in the pluriform and multi-coloured architecture of Africa.
After studying at the TU Delft, Antoni Folkers went to Africa in 1984 to become acquainted with the critique of the practice of Western Modernism. His ‘Modern architecture in Africa’ shows both the clash and the blending of ‘original’ African architecture with Modernism. On the basis of his experiences, he sets the potential and limitations of Modernism in a cultural context and links them with the history and development of Africa.
On the basis of practical examples, Folkers documents and describes the hybrid architectural forms that have emerged from the confrontation and blending with (pre-)modern Western architecture and urbanism. He narrates in passing the history of African architecture.

Berlage was a significant personality in modern Dutch architecture. His career consisted of extraordinary constructive achievements: the Amsterdam Stock Market, which recaptures Romanesque forms through the austere simplicity of its volumes and its use of exposed brick; urbanistic plans for Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht, based on highly unitary compositional designs in open contrast with contemporary trends; as well as extremely controversial works such as the Christian Science Church and the City Museum of The Hague. This book clarifies less well-documented sections of the architect's oeuvre and includes a systematic index along with a catalogue of his writings, many archive images and an important photographic survey.
